Specimen Requirements
Specimen source is required.
Wound specimen submitted on a culture swab containing Aimes Gel or LQ Stuart transport media.
Specimens submitted in expired transport media will be rejected.
Specimens submitted in nasopharyngeal swabs (Green top or Orange top) will be rejected.
Wound culture order is not appropriate for the following specimen sources:
- Vagina
- Cervix
- Urine
- Throat
- Stool
- Eye
- Ear
- Nose
- Sinus
Specimen Transport Temperature
Ambient
Specimen must arrive in laboratory within 48 hours of collection.
Reference Values
No growth in 48 hours.

Collection Instructions
Superficial wound
1. Disinfect wound surface with alcohol and then a 10% povidone-iodine solution. Allow disinfectant to dry.
2. Lift edge of overlying debris (scab), if present.
a. If exudate or pus is present, sample with swab. In the absence of fluid, swab the leading edge of wound.
Ulcers and nodules
1. Clean area with alcohol, and then an iodine solution. Allow to dry.
2. Remove overlying debris and discard.
3. Curette the base of the ulcer or nodule.
