Important Note

Specimen must arrive in the laboratory less than 30 minutes after collection.

Trichomonas rapidly lose their motility at room temperature and specimens submitted greater than 30 minutes after collection cannot be effectively evaluated for the presence of Trichomonas.

Specimen Requirements

Dacron, Rayon or Cotton swab of vaginal discharge placed in normal saline.

Specimens submitted on dry swabs without saline or specimens submitted in culture swabs will be rejected.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Ambient.

87210 – Wet mount for infectious agents.

Collection Instructions

  • Collect vaginal fluid specimen using  a sterile cotton, dacron or rayon swab from the posterior fornix. 
  • Place the swab into a sterile tube with a lid containing no more than 0.5 ml of sterile saline.
  • Replace the cap.
  • Submit the specimen to the laboratory for testing.
