Cultures are held for 72 hours before a final report is issued.

Specimen Requirements

A sterile dacron swab or rayon swab on plastic shaft (Amies or LQ Stuart’s transport media without charcoal).

Specimen must be received in the laboratory within 48 hours of collection.

Reference Values

Beta hemolytic Strep Group B not isolated after 48 hours incubation.

Collection Instructions

Specimens should be collected from the lower vagina (vaginal introitus), and the rectum (i.e., insert swab through the anal sphincter). The same swab may be used for both the vagina and the rectum provided the vagina is swabbed first. Cervical cultures are not recommended and a speculum should not be used for culture.

 

Specimen labels should clearly identify that specimens are for group B streptococcal culture.  If susceptibility testing is ordered for penicillin-allergic women, specimen labels should also identify the patient as penicillin allergic and should specify that susceptibility testing should be performed if GBS is isolated.
