Test Code PTI Protime with INR
Performing Laboratory
YRMC, Coagulation
Day(s) Test Set Up
Monday through Sunday
Specimen Requirements
Light Blue Top (3.2% Sodium Citrate) –Whole blood
Hemolyzed and partially filled tubes are unacceptable
Order of Draw
Patient Preparation
No special patient preparation is necessary.
CPT Coding
85610, Coagulation
Collection Instructions
Ratio of anticoagulant (present in the collection tube) to blood collected is very critical in coagulation studies. Check and collect the correct volume of blood as guided in collection tube label. The etched minimum fill indicator represents the minimum volume of blood required for analysis. Immediately after the draw, gently invert the tube 3 to 4 times.
Methodology
Chronometry
Useful For
Screening assay to detect deficiencies of one or more coagulation factors (factor I,II, V,VII, X).
Screening assay to detect coagulation inhibition.
Monitoring intensity of oral anticoagulant therapy when combined with INR reporting.
Caution: Protime is not useful for detecting deficiciencies of coagulation factors that have no influence on the prothrombin time test (eg, factors VIII, IX, XII, XIII).
