Important Note

This test is used to test for Group B Streptococcus colonization in vaginal/rectal specimen collected from pregnant women. This test is not applicable for any other patient population.

A GBS culture and susceptibility test will be performed on any specimen that tests positive for GBS where the patient has a documented allergy to penicillin.

Specimen Requirements

A vaginal/rectal swab specimen collected according to CDC recommendations and using the Cepheid Collection Device, or swab in a non-nutritive transport medium (Aimes or LQ Stuart Transport medium).

Methodology

RT PCR with reflex to culture and susceptibility if patient is GBS positive and penicillin allergic.

Note: Specimens are placed in LIM broth and incubated at 35-37o  C for 18-24 hours before the GBS PCR test is performed.

Specimen Transport and Stability Information

If the swab specimens will be processed in Lim broth for enrichment within 24 hours, store at room temperature.

 

If the specimens will be processed in Lim broth after 24 hours, store swabs at 2-8 °C for up to six days.
