Monday through Sunday.
Cultures are held for 72 hours before final report is generated.
Gram stain included with culture.
Specimen Requirements
Specimen source is required.
Female:
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Cervix, Endocervix, or Vaginal
Container/Tube: BBL® CultureSwab,
BBL® CultureSwab Plus or other culture transport
swab containing LQ Stuart or Modified Ames transport media
without charcoal.
Specimen Volume: Swab of cervix, endocervix, or
vagina
Male:
Urethra
Container/Tube: Sterile swab or mini-tip swab in sterile
culture transport tube media.
Specimen Volume: Swab of urethra
Specimen Transport Temperature
Ambient
Specimen must be received within 24 hours of collection
Do not refrigerate!
Reference Values
No Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated after 72 hours of incubation.

Collection Instructions
Female:
1. Do not use lubricant on speculum.
2. Cervical mucus should be removed first before inserting a
sterile swab into endocervical canal.
3. Move swab from side-to-side. Avoid touching swab to uninfected
surface.
Note:
1. Label container with patient’s name (first, last, and
middle initial), medical record number (if appropriate), date of
birth, date and time of specimen collection and collectors initials
and/or ID number.
2. Specimen source is required.

Male:
1. Collect discharge specimen 1 hour or more after urination. If
no discharge is available, use a mini-tip swab and collect specimen
from anterior urethra.
2. Insert swab 2 cm to 4 cm into urethra.
Note:
1. Label swab with patient’s name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if appropriate), date of birth, date and time of specimen collection and collectors initials and/or ID number.
