Specimen Requirements
Preserved Stool Specimens
Stool specimens must be submitted in appropriate transport media. Acceptable transport media include the following: SAF, 10% Formalin, MIF, Cary-Blair, Para-Pak C&S, or Stuarts transport media.
Fresh (unpreserved) stool specimens
Solid, semi-solid or liquid samples are acceptable if submitted in clean, leak-proof plastic containers. Fresh stool specimens must be placed in approved transport media within 2 hours of collection. In order to maintain the appropriate ratio of specimen to transport media, specimen should be added only to the line indicated on the transport container
Unacceptable specimens
1. Specimens submitted in PVA
2. Colonic washes, aspirates or other diluted specimens.
3. Stool specimens contaminated by products with an oily or particulate base (e.g. Barium, mineral oil or radiologic contrast media).
Specimen Transport Temperature
Specimen Storage:
1. Formalin and SAF preserved specimens can be stored frozen (-20 C or -70° C), refrigerated (2 – 8° C) or at room temperature (20 – 30° C) and should be tested within two months after collection.
2. Cary-Blair or C&S diluted samples can be stored refrigerated (2 – 8° C) and tested within two weeks after collection or frozen (-20° C) and tested within two months.
3. MIF preserved specimens can be stored frozen (-20° C), refrigerated (2 – °8 C) or at room temperature (20 – 30° C) and should be tested within two months after collection.
