Specimen Requirements
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Sterile Container- Collect specimen in appropriate CSF collection containers.
Minimum CSF Volume: 1mL
Specimen Transport and Stability Information
Stability- Up to 1 hours from the time of collection when stored at ambient temperature.
Specimen must not be sent through the pneumatic tube system, must be hand carried to the laboratory.
Collection Instructions
Handle specimens as biohazardous material.
Collect specimens using standard laboratory procedures.
Special Precautions:
• Hemolyzed specimens should not be used. Hemoglobin is a protein and its presence in cerebrospinal
fluid will result in an increase in measured protein.
• Specimens should be collected prior to the intrathecal administration of contrast media. Significant
positive bias can occur when CSF contains contrast media. Examples of contrast media are Iopamidol
(Isovue-M), Iohexol (Omnipaque), and Metrazimide (Amipaque).
