Cerebrospinal Fluid

- Sterile screw-capped collection container
Specimen Volume:
- 1 mL (minimum volume)
Specimen Transport Temperature
Specimen must not be sent through the pneumatic tube system, must be hand carried to the laboratory.
Send specimens to laboratory as soon as possible after collection. Do not refrigerate

Cultures are held for 4 weeks before finalizing negative.

Conventional fungal culture methods.
Includes India Ink preparation.

Specimen Collection Instructions
Collection Instructions: Collect specimen as follows:
- 1. Collect aseptically according to established CSF collection procedures.
- Before collecting specimen, wipe away any excessive amount of secretion and discharge, if appropriate.
- Obtain secretions or fluid from source with sterile swab.
- If smear and culture are requested or both a bacterial culture and fungal culture are requested, collect a second swab to maximize test sensitivity.
- 2. Label container with patient’s name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if appropriate), date of birth, date and time of specimen collection and collectors initials and/or ID number.
