A Bordetella pertussis PCR test is required with Bordetella pertussis DFA tests requested. PCR Testing is performed at Mayo Medical Laboratory

Specimen Collection Instructions

1.  For BP DFA: Using the NP swab with the green cap, swab both nares as deep into the nasal passages as possible tihout creating severe discomfort to the patient. Remove the white cap from the plastic tranport container and place the swab into the container.
2.  For BP PCR: Using the NP with the orange cap, swab both nares as deep into the nasal passages as possible with out creating severe discomfort to the patient. Remove the white cap from the plastic tranport container and place the swab into the container.
3.  Label both swabs with aptient’s name (first, last and middle intitial), medical record number (if appropriate), date of birth, date and time of specimen collection and collectors initials and/or ID number.
4. Specimen source is required.
