Test Code ANER Culture, Anaerobic
Performing Laboratory
YRMC, Microbiology
Day(s) Test Set Up
Monday through Sunday.
Cultures are held for 5 days before a Final Report is issued.
Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens - specimen source is required:
- Abscess – Sterile, screw capped
container, syringe with needle removed If the specimen is submitted
in a syringe, the needle may be replaced with sterile syringe cap
or sterile capped blunt cannula. Specimens submitted on
culture swabs are sub-optimal for anaerobic culture.
- Body Fluid – Screw-capped, sterile
container, evacuuated collection container. Specimens
submitted on swabs are not acceptable.
- Tissue – Screw-capped, sterile
container(s) without fixative or preservative Specimen in
formalin is not acceptable. Tissue specimens should not be placed
into a culture swab prior to transport.
- Trans-trachael Aspirate – Screw-capped,
sterile container(s) or aspirate trap. If an aspirate trap specimen
is submitted, attach the tubing firmly to the top of the aspirate
trap to ensure specimen does not leak during transport.
The following specimen sources are not suitable for anaerobic cultures and will not be accepted:
- Throat (exception: Peritonsilar Abscess)
- Vagina
- Cervix
- Urethra
- Urine (exception: Suprapubic Aspirate)
- Sputum
- Catheter tips
- Mouth
- Nasal
- Eye
- Ear

Specimen Collection Instructions
Abscess
1. For most open lesions and abscesses,
remove the superficial flora by decontaminating the skin before
collecting a specimen from the advancing margin or
base.
2. Appropriate specimens include but are not
limited to the following: Pleural Fluid, Pericardial Fluid,
Peritoneal Fluid, Peritoneal Dialysate, Ascites and Synovial Fluid.
Specimen Source is Required.
3. A closed abscess is the specimen site of
choice. Aspirate the abscess contents with a syringe and submit the
specimen in the syring or expell the contents into a sterile,
scre-capped container.
4. Specimen source is required
Note: Label container with patient’s name
(first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if
appropriate), date of birth, date and time of collection and
collector’s initials an/or ID number.
Note: Label container with patient’s name (first, last, and middle initial, medical record number (if appropriate), date of birth, date and time of collection and collector’s initials and/or ID number.

Body Fluid
1. Collect aseptically. Disinfect site with
alcohol if collecting by needle and syringe.
2. Specimen source is required.
Note: Label container with patient’s name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if appropriate), date of birth, date and time of collection and collector’s initials and/or ID number
______________________________________________________________________________________
Tissue
1. Collect aseptically avoiding indegenous
microbiota. Select caseous portion if available.
2. Specimen source is required.
Note: Label container with patient’s name (first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if appropriate), date of birth, date and time of collection and collector’s initials and/or ID number

Trans-trachael Aspirate
1.Collect aseptically according to
trans-trachael aspiration protocol. Trachael aspirates obtained by
scution are not accpetable for anaerobic culture.
2. Specimen source is required.
Note: Label container with patient’s name
(first, last, and middle initial), medical record number (if
appropriate), date of birth, date and time of collection and
collector’s initials and/or ID number
